THE FATES, 2019
Chamberlain analyses the philosophy of repetition and continuity through experimental methods of film making. This piece was influenced by her interest in the 1960s Structural film movement. Structural film uses the raw elements of film as the medium, for example sound and light, as agencies in themselves which form part of the narrative of films. ‘The Fates’ uses motors and spools to create a conveyor belt style projector, with no projection. The process of the film turning on the spool becomes the ‘event’ in itself. A deconstructed projector, or a sculpture of a film happening.
Commissioned by Yorkshire Sculpture International for Central Square, Wellington Street, ‘The Fates’ explores ideas of change and perpetual movement in the busy city centre of Leeds. Central Square, now a vibrant shopping mall and corporate office, was previously the site of Leeds’ central railway. The squeak of the motors and the parallel pairings speak to the history of the site. Chamberlain exhibited ‘The Fates’ as a joint exhibition, Trading Spaces, alongside Abbi Vasey, Emily Harling, Glen Ogden, Tanith Bam, Ben Allan, Ruth Sultman, & Seren Oakley.
