COLLAPSE, JUNE 2024

‘Collapse’ is an ephemeral, cumulative sculpture constructed of oyster panels, salvaged from a rural pearl farm in East Arnhem land. Exploring scale and found objects, Chamberlain records the building and eventual destruction of a tower-like sculpture built on the headland of Elizabeth Bay. Collapse could be viewed as the effects of a ‘build up’ of avoidance, a dismissal or an underestimation. An experimental work, the sculpture grows taller and taller, until it loses balance, toppling under its own weight.

Building quickly and intuitively against the elements, Chamberlain is influenced by key British sculptors Phylidda Barlow and David Nash. With prior work history at outdoor galleries such as Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Sculpture by the Sea, her work speaks to her relationship with sculpture in the landscape and the freedom this represents.
